Scope and ContentLouis XV urges the governor of New France to appoint Claude-Charles de Beauharnois, Chevalier de Beauharnois (1717-1784), as an artillery commander on April 1, 1745. Beauharnois’ brilliant military career had begun with his appointment as an ensign in the French troops in Canada. Previously, he had served as a midshipman in Rochefort. He worked his way up to become a captain in the colonial regular troops and served in several forts in North America before returning to France in 1750 to serve in the navy. He was awarded the cross of Saint-Louis in 1749.

General notes: the document was registered at the Bureau de contrôle de la marine de la Nouvelle-France in Quebec City on October 21, 1746. The signature is illegible.
