Scope and ContentOrder in which Charles de La Boische, Marquis of Beauharnois (1671-1749), governor of New France, instructs his nephew Claude-Charles de Beauharnois, Chevalier de Beauharnois (1717-1784), a captain in the colonial regular troops, to go on detachment to Detroit. His mission is to persuade the Huron-Wendat to move to Montreal, thereby calming tensions between them and other nations at the fort. Captain Beauharnois would be accompanied by Haudenosaunee from Montreal’s missions. From the start of the 18th century, officers in the colonial regular troops were frequently sent as diplomats to renegotiate with Indigenous nations the terms of their alliances with France. Beauharnois’ brilliant military career had begun in 1734, when he arrived in Canada as an ensign with the colonial regular troops. Previously, he had served as a midshipman in Rochefort. He worked his way up to become a captain in the colonial regular troops and served in several forts in North America before returning to France in 1750 to serve in the navy. He was awarded the cross of Saint-Louis in 1749. NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
