Scope and ContentOrder in which Charles de La Boische, Marquis of Beauharnois (1671-1749), governor of New France, instructs his nephew Claude-Charles de Beauharnois, Chevalier de Beauharnois (1717-1784), a captain in the colonial regular troops, to go on detachment to France to deliver two packages to Jean-Frédéric Phélypeaux de Maurepas (1701-1781), secretary of state for the Marine under Louis XV. The packages were to contain dispatches and letters from the colonial administration for delivery to the secretary and the king. Prestigious missions of this type were considered highly desirable among the colony’s military officers and nobility. They entailed personal contact with the secretary and sometimes the king, which could result in favours from him or his ministers, thereby helping advance careers.

Beauharnois’ brilliant military career had begun in 1734, when he arrived in Canada as an ensign with the colonial regular troops. Previously, he had served as a midshipman in Rochefort. He worked his way up to become a captain in the colonial regular troops and served in several forts in North America before returning to France in 1750 to serve in the navy. He was awarded the cross of Saint-Louis in 1749.
