Scope and ContentWilliam Sherlock became a lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Foot on September 28, 1760, in Montreal, New France. Twenty days earlier the city had surrendered to the British army under the command of Jeffrey Amherst (1717-1797), and it was he who granted Sherlock’s commission.

The Royal Regiment of Foot was founded in 1633, making it the oldest line regiment of the British army. In 1751 it was also known as the First Regiment of Foot. It arrived in Nova Scotia in 1757, during the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763). The regiment distinguished itself, notably during the siege of Louisbourg in 1758 and the capture of Quebec City the following year, and was under the command of the Scottish colonel James St. Clair (1688-1762).
