Skip to main contentAppointment certificate - Commission of militia captain granted to Jacques Corriveau by James Murray, governor of Quebec | McCord Museum
Corriveau was one in a line of influential militia captains going back to his grandfather, Jacques Corriveau (1671-1748). The newly commissioned captain was the cousin of Marie-Josephte Corriveau (1733-1763), called “La Corriveau,” who was hanged and had her corpse exhibited in an iron cage.
Often granted to a village notable, the commission of militia captain was a prestigious appointment that carried with it major civil and military responsibilities. Quebec City had passed into British hands in September 1759, during the Seven years’ War (1754-1763), and James Murray (1721-1794) became its governor under the new administration. This gave him the power to appoint militia captains, who played an important role in maintaining order in the seigneuries.
