Scope and ContentIrishman William Haviland (1718-1784) began his military service in 1739 in the British infantry and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1752. In 1757 he served in North America during the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763). This document is the commission in the rank of colonel granted him in February 1758. In the summer of that year, Haviland would head one of the columns in the unsuccessful attack on Fort Carillon. He also led a command intended to converge on Montreal via Lake Champlain in 1760.

Physical description: vellum paper; traces of a wax seal; ribbon-width embossed cardboard.
