Scope and ContentJacques Corriveau (1671-1748) was granted the commission of militia captain for the seigneury of La Durantaye (Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse) in 1706. Many years later, during the War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748), he was a militia captain for the neighbouring seigneury of Saint-Vallier. Jacques Corriveau was the great-uncle of Marie-Josephte Corriveau (1733-1763), called “La Corriveau,” who was hanged and had her corpse exhibited in an iron cage. Often granted to a village notable, the commission of militia captain was a prestigious appointment that carried with it major civil and military responsibilities.
