Scope and ContentIn this missive, Jean-Maurice-Josué Boisberthelot de Beaucours (1662-1750), governor of Montreal since 1733, orders Claude-Charles de Beauharnois, Chevalier de Beauharnois (1717-1784), a captain in the colonial regular troops garrisoned in Montreal, to go on detachment to Deux-Montagnes in order to make a report on the situation there. During this period the War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748) was under way, and New France was at war with England. Beauharnois’ brilliant military career had begun in 1734, when he arrived in Canada as an ensign with the colonial regular troops. Previously, he had served as a midshipman in Rochefort. He worked his way up to become a captain in the colonial regular troops and served in several forts in North America before returning to France in 1750 to serve in the navy. He was awarded the cross of Saint-Louis in 1749. NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
