Early in 1849, the reformist prime minister Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine (1807-1864), would cite the reports of the 1846 commissions to support a law aimed at broadening the compensation offered to inhabitants of Lower Canada who had suffered during the repression. The Tories were bitterly opposed to this project, which they maintained rewarded the rebels. The adoption of the law would lead to the fire that devastated the Parliament of United Canada, located in Montreal’s St. Anne Market, which was started by rioters on April 25, 1849.

Scope and ContentPrinted document issued on March 19, 1849 by the office of the provincial secretary of United Canada, James Leslie, in response to a request for information made on March 8 by the Legislative Assembly. It contains the appendices of the reports from the various regional commissions charged in 1846 with identifying the claims of inhabitants of the former Upper Canada whose property was damaged during the rebellion of 1837. It includes the claimants’ names, the nature of their claim and the compensation awarded. A number of laws granting compensation would be adopted as a result of these claims. Early in 1849, the reformist prime minister Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine (1807-1864), would cite the reports of the 1846 commissions to support a law aimed at broadening the compensation offered to inhabitants of Lower Canada who had suffered during the repression.
