Scope and ContentPrinted document designed to help landowning officers and future owners of land on St. John’s Island to develop their property and overcome the difficulties caused by the American War of Independence (1775-1783). First, it is pointed out that the old cadastral plans were poorly executed and need to be revised for the land to be effectively used. The problems in developing the island caused by the war prior to 1780 are also addressed. But it is evidently the Quit Rent Act introduced in 1780 that is of greatest concern to landowners, since it allows the governor of the island to sell land on which outstanding payments are not settled within six months. In an effort to resolve these problems, the document suggests sending petitions to London to raise awareness in the mother country of the difficulties faced by the landowners in paying their arrears during wartime, but also owing to the climatic conditions peculiar to St. John’s Island.NotesSource of title: based on the title of the document.
