Scope and ContentIn 1775 the Society of Jesus of Canada was suppressed and its property seized by the British colonial authorities. In 1769-1770, Jeffery Amherst (1717-1797), a former officer in the British army who had taken part in the siege of Quebec City in 1759, applied for a land concession from Jesuit property. Since there were no documents giving a detailed description of all the Jesuits’ estates, Amherst’s request was denied. However, in 1787 the governor of Canada, Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester (1724-1808), received instructions from London to conduct a full inquiry into the status of the Jesuit properties. The resulting report was sent to the lawyers of the Parliament of Paris, so they could give an opinion as to how property could be granted to Amherst. This document is the opinion they prepared for Amherst. They explain how the French Jesuits’ properties had been reclaimed by the king, they discuss the properties of the Canadian Jesuits and advise Amherst on how to go about acquiring a concession. The latter would never in fact acquire any Jesuit land, but since London had promised him a concession, the British parliament authorized an annuity of 3,000 pounds to be paid by way of compensation to his heirs.NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
