Scope and ContentFrançois de Beauharnois de La Chaussaye, Baron of Beauville (1665-1746), was a member of the powerful Beauharnois family, which had links to the Pontchartrains and the Bégons. François was the elder brother of Charles de Beauharnois, Marquis of Beauharnois (1671-1749), who would become governor general of New France. From 1702 to 1705, François was the intendant of New France. In 1705, thanks to his influential network, he was appointed intendant of the French naval forces. In April 1707, in recognition of his excellent service, Louis XIV granted him the seigneury of Port Maltois, in Acadia, located at the mouth of the La Hève River (now LaHave, Nova Scotia). In May of the following year, the king elevated the seigneury to a barony.NotesSource of title: based on the title of the document.
