Scope and ContentFrançois de Beauharnois de Beaumont, Baron of Beauville, Marquis of La Ferté Beauharnois (1714-1800), was a member of the powerful Beauharnois family, which played an important role in the navy and the North American colonies. He was a knight in the Military Order of Saint-Louis, a ship’s commander and the former governor of the Windward Islands (which include Martinique). The document is a copy of the certificate elevating his seigneury of La Ferté into a marquisate to be called La Ferté Beauharnois. Louis XV wished to elevate the seigneury La Ferté to a marquisate because it possessed all the qualities required, but also as a way of rewarding the Beauharnois family for their military and administrative contributions, in particular François de Beauharnois, who had served his country for over 35 years.NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
