Adhémar de Saint-Martin arrived in New France in 1665 as a soldier in the Carignan-Salières regiment, settling in the colony after the regiment returned to France. In 1673 he became a notary, and in 1687 he was appointed clerk to the notaries of Montreal, where would live for the rest of his life.
Pierre Boucher arrived in New France with his family in 1634 or 1635, as a child. He later became a soldier and an interpreter of Indigenous languages, paying a key role at several pivotal moments in the colonization of the Saint Lawrence Valley. Boucher was appointed governor of Trois-Rivières in 1662, and in 1667 he founded his seigneury of Boucherville.

Scope and ContentLetter addressed to Antoine Adhémar de Saint-Martin (1639-1714), royal clerk and notary in Montreal, written by Pierre Boucher (1622-1717), seigneur and founder of Boucherville. It reflects the close friendship between the two men. Boucher expresses his relief at no longer having to settle disputes between inhabitants of his seigneury and mentions a recent example about which he has heard. He tells Saint-Martin that he has full confidence in him.
