Scope and ContentLetter from Donald Macdonald addressed to Robertson, Masson and Company in which he states that his son will pay within the required delay the balance owing for a shipment of tobacco delivered to La Baie. The Scottish merchant Hugh Robertson and his brother founded the Glasgow firm of Hugh Robertson and Company, which specialized in import-export. A Montreal branch was opened in 1815, and Joseph Masson (1791-1847), a former employee there, was appointed manager and became a shareholder. The company was henceforth known as Robertson, Masson and Company. Masson eventually became majority shareholder and the firm diversified, opening new branches named for various shareholders and partners. Joseph Masson was one of the most successful French-Canadian businessmen of the first half of the 19th century.
