Scope and ContentLetter from Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, Marquis of Cavagnial (1698-1778), governor general of New France, to Michel Chartier de Lotbinière, Marquis of Lotbinière (1723-1798), a captain in the colonial regular troops. The letter is Vaudreuil’s reply to one that Lotbinière had sent on February 14 concerning his seigneury. Lotbinière had apparently complained that the wheat flour produced by his mill had been requisitioned by the army on the orders of Jean-Daniel Dumas (1721-1794), a captain in the colonial regular troops. Dumas had been ordered to place defences on the Jacques-Cartier River in order to block British access to Montreal and to feed his soldiers by taking supplies from seigneuries in the region. Vaudreuil assures Lotbinière that an order will be issued allowing him to reclaim sufficient wheat to feed his family. NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
