Scope and ContentIn 1783 the American War of Independence ended, and the young nation was obliged to re-establish its trade agreements. In 1786 Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), who would become the country’s third president, was sent to France as an ambassador tasked with negotiating new trade agreements with Europe’s major monarchies. During his trip he became friendly with Jacques-Pierre Brissot de Warville (1754-1793) and Étienne Clavière (1735-1793). In 1787 these financial experts would publish their book De la France et des États-Unis, ou de l’importance de la Révolution de l’Amérique pour le bonheur de la France, des rapports de ce royaume et des États-Unis, des avantages réciproques qu’ils peuvent retirer de leurs liaisons de commerce, et enfin de la situation actuelle des États-Unis. In this letter, Jefferson gives Warville his opinion of the book and offers a few further details concerning commercial operations in some of the states, particularly with regard to the cultivation of cotton.
