Scope and ContentIt is not known precisely when Louis Tantouin de La Touche (1662-1722) arrived in Canada, but he was appointed keeper of stores in Montreal in 1686. On July 1, 1690 he was made commissary of the Marine, a key position in the colonial administration of the time. His responsibilities, under the direction of the Intendant of New France and the general commissaries, included regular inspection of troops, distribution of soldiers’ wages and uniforms, and supervision of stores. La Touche’s diligence was rewarded by his superiors. Around 1700 he asked to return to France in order to manage his personal affairs. This document records the permission granted him in 1701, with the king’s thanks, for a transfer to Rochefort as commissary of the Marine. He only held the job for a year, since it became a venal appointment and he lacked the funds to acquire it.
