Scope and ContentIn this letter Joachim de Sacquespée de Voipreux (1704-1767), a former captain in the colonial regular troops who was serving as commander of Fort Saint-Jean, replies to one of his sons, almost certainly Philippe de Sacquespée (1728-?), a lieutenant in the colonial regular troops. The father is upset to learn that his son is not happy with the destination he has chosen, but without revealing where it is. There are several indications that Sacquespée was writing to Philippe, who had been posted to Martinique as a lieutenant in 1754. In his letter, the father thanks his son for having sent him tobacco and the best coffee he has ever tasted; at the time the letter was written Sacquespée’s other sons were serving in the colonial regular troops in New France. The father tells his son that he will do all he can to get the posting changed by appealing to two European contacts, the Duke of Stisacque and Cardinal Dominique de La Rochefoucauld (1712-1800), and he advises Philippe to write to his aunts. He also sends news of the family, including Philippe’s brother Louis de Sacquespée de Gaumicourt (1729-1767?), who served at Fort Frontenac. His other brother, who bore the title of Chevalier but whose name we do not know, distinguished himself at the Battle of Monongahela (July 9, 1755), which Sacquespée describes. He also mentions other military engagements that took place in 1755, along with the names of officers he knows who have been killed. NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
