Scope and ContentIn 1717 the Chevalier Philippe de Lagau was appointed secretary to the French ambassador to Stockholm, Louis-Pierre de La Marck, Count of La Marck. When the latter was replaced by a new ambassador, De Lagau continued writing to Abbé Dubois and to the count before his return to France in 1720. His missives describe the peace talks taking place between Sweden and Denmark as the Great Northern War (1700-1721) drew to a close. These talks were delayed by concurrent negotiations with Charles-Frédéric de Holstein-Gottorp (1700-1739), former pretender to the Swedish throne. An agreement was finally reached that it was hoped would discourage lingering Russian aggression.
