Scope and ContentAugustin Labadie is appointed returning officer for the Assembly of Lower Canada by lieutenant general George Prevost (1767-1816). With war against the United States (1812-1815) imminent, Prevost was attempting to gain the support of the French Canadians of Lower Canada. To this end, he appointed several French Canadians to the Legislative Council, passing over the less loyal politicians in favour of the more moderate. Labadie’s appointment was undoubtedly a reflection of Prevost’s political strategies.NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
