Scope and ContentThe Chevalier Dubourg served as the French ambassador to Vienna between 1718 and 1725. In reports submitted between October 15, 1719 and November 29, 1721 he informed Philippe of Orléans, then regent to Louis XV, about ongoing negotiations between the great kingdoms of Europe. Dubourg recounts how the emperor of Austria, Charles VI (1685-1740), was mediating between Sweden and its enemies (Russia, Denmark, Prussia, etc.) following the Great Northern War (1700-1721). At the same time the emperor was negotiating to his own advantage the end of the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1718-1720), which had pitted Spain against Austria, France, Britain and the Dutch Republic. Under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), Spain had lost territories in Italy to the Habsburgs, but its attempts to regain these territories failed. The Chevalier Dubourg also informed the Regency about the various pretenders to the thrones of the kingdoms of Italy, while also discussing religious conflicts between Protestants and Catholics in Austria.
