Born in England, Hale was a former naval and army officer in the British forces. After serving in Halifax he returned to England and founded a family but subsequently returned to North America, settling in 1799 in Quebec City, where he held the position of deputy paymaster general of the British troops stationed the Canadas. In 1807 he was appointed inspector general of public accounts. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1808 until his death in 1838.

Scope and ContentLetter addressed to John Hale (1765-1838) inviting him to attend a meeting of the Legislative Council convened by James Henry Craig (1748-1812), governor general of British North America. Born in England, Hale was a former naval and army officer in the British forces. After serving in Halifax he returned to England and founded a family but subsequently returned to North America, settling in 1799 in Quebec City, where he held the position of deputy paymaster general of the British troops stationed the Canadas. In 1807 he was appointed inspector general of public accounts. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1808 until his death in 1838.
