The latter died of his wounds, but before Dubuission could receive any official sanction he fled the colony and took refuge in the French West Indies. Owing to his family connections with the colonial authorities, he was able to obtain a letter of pardon for his crime, and on his return to New France in 1740 Dubuisson resumed his military career.
