Lady Catherine Pelham was the widow of Henry Pelham, prime minister of Great Britain from 1743 until his death in 1754. She was the daughter of John Manners, 2nd Duke of Rutland, and of Lady Catherine Russell. Born in 1705, she died in 1780. When the receipt was issued, she lived in the region of Whitehall, in London.
The Verge of the Court was an area of London situated within a radius of 12 miles (19 km) around the royal court. It belonged to the monarchy and was subject to a distinct legal system. For example, during the 18th century one could not be arrested for debt in the area.
