Scope and ContentFounded in 1783 in Montreal by the Scottish-born Simon McTavish, the North West Company employed over a thousand men in its fur trading activities, mostly French Canadians. The company recognized their expertise in the trade, and readily paid them generously.This contract, signed in 1811, reveals that a canoeman like Pierre Lemieux of Saint-Constant could earn 250 pounds for an expedition to the West.
