Scope and ContentNotarized contract regarding the sale by Marie Françoise Gareaux of half of a plot of land in the village of Saint-Jean, in the fiefdom of Saint-Vallier, to Jacques Corriveau (1729-1788). The document was signed before notaries Christophe-Hilarion Dulaurent (1695-1760) and Paul-Antoine-François Lanouiller Desgranges. A second agreement on the verso states that if Jacques Corriveau fails to pay Marie Françoise Gareaux the sum of 300 pounds in the year following the transaction, he will be obliged to mortgage his property. This additional clause was signed before notaries Dulaurent and Simon Sanguinet (1733-1790).

At the time the contract was signed, Marie Françoise Gareaux had just inherited, at the age of 24, a fifth of the land formerly owned by her parents, both deceased. Probably not in a position to exploit it, she sold it to Corriveau for the sum of 300 pounds.

Corriveau was one in a line of influential militia captains going back to his grandfather, Jacques Corriveau (1671-1748). Made a captain in 1759, he was the cousin of Marie-Josephte Corriveau (1733-1763), called “La Corriveau,” who was hanged and had her corpse exhibited in an iron cage.
