Scope and ContentFondée en 1783 par l’Écossais Simon McTavish à Montréal, la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest engage pour le commerce des fourrures plus d’un millier d’employés, majoritairement des Canadiens français. La compagnie reconnaît l’expertise de ces derniers dans ce domaine et n’hésite pas à les payer rondement.

Selon ce que stipule ce contrat signé en 1821, un canoteur comme Michel Le Page de Montréal reçoit 700 livres de gages pour trois ans de service dans l’Ouest. une somme importante à l'époque et supérieure au salaire moyen des ouvriers montréalais.
