Scope and ContentDecision by Alexandre Prouville de Tracy (1596?-1670), governor general of New France, concerning the request submitted to him by Father François-Joseph Le Mercier (1604-1690), superior-general of the Jesuit missions in New France. Le Mercier wished to enlarge the church in Quebec City’s Upper Town to meet public needs. This necessarily involved an encroachment on public space. The intendant of New France, Jean Talon (1626-1694), had agreed to the request. But before finalizing the decision, Tracy wished to confirm with Messrs Le Barrays, de Villeroy and d’Auteuil that there would be no negative impact on the public. After verification, the request was approved, and the Jesuits were given a plot of public land in Quebec’s Upper Town measuring 30 feet square.
