Created in 1664, the provost court of Quebec was the first judicial body with the power to judge civil and criminal affairs. It was administered by a lieutenant-general, a king’s attorney and a clerk. It had jurisdiction over all civil and criminal matters in the realms of justice, police, trade and navigation, and it could hear appeals against sentences passed by bailiff’s courts or seigneurial judges.

Scope and ContentThis document is the permit granted to Marie Charlotte Guillemin, widow of the wealthy merchant Joseph Riverin (1699-1756), to put up for auction a second time the house on Notre-Dame Street bequeathed by her husband to his children and to Louis Dupont Duchambon de Vergor (1713-1775), a captain in the colonial regular troops married to Joseph Riverin’s daughter.Created in 1664, the provost court of Quebec was the first judicial body with the power to judge civil and criminal affairs.
