Scope and ContentCharles de Monseignat (1652-1718), director for the tax farmers of the Domaine d’Occident, and George Regnard Duplessis (?-1714), receiver of the Admiralty, establish an agreement with François Badeau, master carpenter of Quebec City. The latter is contracted to retrieve and preserve the contents of seven British ships that have foundered off the Île aux Oeufs. Badeau is to be paid for the job and is forbidden to sell the merchandise from the ships.

In the summer of 1711, Hovenden Walker set off at the head of a fleet of vessels with the aim of capturing Quebec City. But the difficulty of navigating the Saint Lawrence River under poor weather conditions led to the loss of seven transport vessels and one storeship, and the rest of the fleet abandoned the assault on Quebec. It was one of the British navy’s worst catastrophes during the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
