Scope and ContentExtract from the instructions sent by the House of Commons to lieutenant-general George Prevost (1767-1816), newly appointed governor-in-chief of British North America and administrator of the province of Lower Canada. He is reminded that practice of the Catholic religion is only tolerated in the colony and that the Anglican faith should take precedence in all ecclesiastical matters. Like earlier members of his family,

Sir George Prevost pursued a career as an officer in the British army. He served as an administrator on several occasions, notably in the West Indies, and was appointed lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia in 1808.
