Scope and ContentDocument probably written by the secretary of the governor general of New France, Charles de Beauharnois de La Boische, Marquis of Beauharnois (1671-1749), who had arrived in Quebec City in August 1726. It describes Beauharnois’ visit to Montreal and his meeting with the Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawks) of the Sault-Saint-Louis mission (now Kahnawà:ke). An elaborate reception was held in the city at the beginning of June 1727 in honour of the new governor. On June 16 he went to Lachine escorted by a large number of militiamen, then continued on to Sault-Saint-Louis. There the governor met with Pierre de Lauzon (1687-1742), the Jesuit missionary in charge of the mission. Beauharnois reviewed the 600 Haudenosaunee warriors ready to take up arms. According to the eye-witness account of the document’s author, they were as disciplined and organized as the French troops. The welcome ceremony is described, and once it was over Beauharnois returned to Montreal the same day, where his presence was once again celebrated.
