Scope and ContentOrder sent to Jacques Corriveau (1671-1748), militia captain of the parish of Saint-Vallier, informing him of the measures to be taken in the case of a British invasion of New France during the Austrian War of Succession (1740-1748). The order was sent by Gaspard Adhémar de Lantagnac (1681-1756), king’s lieutenant and acting governor of Quebec City, in the absence of the governor general Roland-Michel Barrin, Marquis of La Galissonière (1693-1756). Lantagnac orders the setting up of a communications system between towns along the coast. He outlines precautionary procedures and specifies the measures to be taken by the militia and inhabitants of coastal areas in the case of an enemy invasion. And he recommends that captains and commanders in coastal areas maintain the militia in good fettle. Interestingly, the document reveals two facts – that Lantagnac served as king’s lieutenant and as acting governor of Quebec City – that are not mentioned anywhere else. Also worth noting: Jacques Corriveau was the great-uncle of Marie-Josephte Corriveau (1733-1763), called “La Corriveau,” who was hanged and had her corpse exhibited in an iron cage.
