Scope and ContentLetter in which François-Gaston de Lévis, Duke of Lévis (1719-1787), former commander of the French regular troops in North America and governor of Artois in 1780, replies to an unidentified correspondent living in North America. Lévis writes that he is in good health and that he has appealed to Antoine de Sartine (1729-1801), secretary of state for the Marine, to advance his correspondent’s requests, but without success. Lévis is hopeful that if the American War of Independence (1775-1783), in which France is involved, lasts, it will be easier for his correspondent to obtain what he desires – presumably promotion in the army or the French navy.
