Scope and ContentLetter from Colonel Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, Count of Bougainville (1729-1781) to the intendant of New France, François Bigot (1703-1778), written at the Cap-Rouge camp on September 8, 1759, during the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763). In this dispatch, Bougainville asks the intendant for shoes for his soldiers, who wear them out through their constant marching, and for tarpaulins to protect supplies and ammunition. He also states that there are 22 British ships anchored in the Saint Lawrence River opposite the camp. In August, Bougainville had received orders from Lieutenant-General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, Marquis of Montcalm (1712-1759), to protect communications and supply lines between Montreal and Quebec City while the latter remained besieged. On September 13, 1759, five days after this letter was written, the famous Battle of the Plains of Abraham took place.
