File
This file focusses on posthumous exhibitions devoted to Clarence A. Gagnon organized by major Quebec and Canadian institutions, as well as other tributes paid to the painter. It is composed primarily of press clippings, exhibition catalogues and invitations.
A catalogue and invitation addressed to Lucile R. Gagnon document the retrospective presented June 16 to July 16, 1942, at the Museum of the Province of Quebec (today the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec). There are also six press clippings about the exhibition. One of them includes a photograph taken at the opening that features Jean Bruchési, provincial under-secretary; Édouard Montpetit, director-general of technical education; Hector Perrier, provincial secretary; Paul Rainville, curator of the museum; Victor Doré, superintendent of public instruction; and the artist's widow, Lucile R. Gagnon. Two other articles, including one published in La Presse on July 4, 1942, report on the success of the exhibition, which had, to date, already attracted over 7,000 visitors.
A memorial exhibition presented from August 7 to September 30, 1942, by the Art Association of Montreal at the Museum of Fine Arts is documented by a catalogue and seven press clippings, several of which mention lectures given by Martin Baldwin, curator of the "Toronto Museum" (the Art Gallery of Toronto, today the Art Gallery of Ontario), and René Chicoine, a painter and professor at the École des beaux-arts. The exhibition is also mentioned in a column by Ernest Bilodeau published in Le Devoir on September 22, 1942.
In addition, the file includes an invitation and 11 press clippings chronicling the memorial exhibitions of the work of Clarence A. Gagnon and J. W. Beatty at the Art Gallery of Toronto from October 16 to November 1, 1942. An illustrated catalogue, an invitation addressed to the artist's widow, and four press clippings document the memorial exhibition that opened November 30, 1942, at the National Gallery of Canada.
A catalogue, an invitation, numerous press clippings, and copies of talks delivered by Jean-Baptiste Lagacé and Jean Chauvin provide information about a tribute exhibition to the artist organized by the Cercle Universitaire April 18 to 24, 1943. One article published in La Presse on April 21, 1943, reports specifically on the lecture given by journalist and publicist Jean Chauvin as part of this event. Finally, press clippings, lists of paintings, and invitations chronicle the exhibitions presented by the Montreal Arts Club (1943), Université Laval (1943) and the Mount Royal Art Centre (1965).
The file also includes several additional press clippings documenting honours received by Gagnon, including the Jessie Dow prize awarded by the Art Association of Montreal for his painting The Wayside Cross, Winter.
