William Bell Malloch was born in Perth, Ontario, in 1845. He was a doctor employed by the Hudson's Bay Company from 1869 to 1878. Although he was stationed at Moose Factory, he often had to travel to other fur-trading posts when his medical expertise was required. Malloch was also an amateur photographer, and he captured numerous scenes during his time at Moose Factory. William Bell Malloch died in 1881.
Scope and Content
The William Bell Malloch fonds contains documents on the Canadian North and on the lifestyles of Canada's northern peoples. In it are photographs of Little Whale River, Abitibi River, whale and seal hunting, Inuit lifestyles and scenes of family life. Its textual materials include two copies of a tapescript entitled "Six Hundred Miles on Snowshoes" that describes Malloch's trek on snowshoes from Montréal to Moose Factory, in the Far North, in the winter of 1870.
