Both these factories belonged to the former American senator Thomas Craig Fields (1825-1885), who had been accused of the embezzlement of public funds and corruption in a fraud masterminded by the New York politician William Magear Tweed, known as “Boss” Tweed (1823-1878). Fields fled the United States in 1872 and spent the rest of his life in Quebec.
