Scope and ContentFounded in 1783 in Montreal by British merchants who included Simon McTavish and the Frobisher brothers, the North West Company employed over a thousand men in its fur trading activities, mostly French Canadians. The company recognized their expertise in the trade, and readily paid them generously.This contract, signed in 1801, reveals that a canoeman in the helm position like Jean Baptiste Aubuchon de Berthier could earn 450 pounds for an expedition to the West.
