Scope and ContentAntoine Louis Rouillé (1689-1761) served as secretary of state for the Marine until July 24, 1754, after which he moved to the department of foreign affairs. Here, he sends to “Monseigneur” (probably a member of the royal family) the dispatches produced by Gaston-Pierre-Charles de Lévis-Lomagne, Duke of Mirepoix (1699-1757), between April 16 and 21, and informs his correspondent that British troops are advancing into New France but have made no attempt to attack the king’s squadrons. According to Rouillé, the breaking point has been avoided for the moment. The Seven Years’ War (1754-1763) would be officially declared the following year, although hostilities broke out in North America in 1754.NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
