The Scottish merchant Hugh Robertson and his brother founded the Glasgow firm of Hugh Robertson and Company, which specialized in import-export. A Montreal branch was opened in 1815, and Joseph Masson (1791-1847), a former employee there, was appointed manager and became a shareholder.
