Scope and ContentTobacco sales figures for the Masson and Langevin Company for the month of June 1835.
The Scottish merchant Hugh Robertson and his brother founded the Glasgow firm of Hugh Robertson and Company, which specialized in import-export. A Montreal branch was opened in 1815, and Joseph Masson (1791-1847), a former employee there, was appointed manager and became a shareholder. The company was henceforth known as Robertson, Masson and Company. Masson eventually became majority shareholder and the firm diversified, opening new branches named for various shareholders and partners. Joseph Masson was one of the most successful French-Canadian businessmen of the first half of the 19th century. The Quebec City branch operated as the Masson and Langevin Company, since the brothers Charles and Jean Langevin had entered into a partnership with Masson.
