Scope and ContentStatement of account from Robertson, Masson and Company with Cuvillier and Sons.

The Scottish merchant Hugh Robertson and his brother founded the Glasgow firm of Hugh Robertson and Company, which specialized in import-export. A Montreal branch was opened in 1815, and Joseph Masson (1791-1847), a former employee there, was appointed manager and became a shareholder. The company was henceforth known as Robertson, Masson and Company. Masson eventually became majority shareholder and the firm diversified, opening new branches named for various shareholders and partners. Joseph Masson was one of the most successful French-Canadian businessmen of the first half of the 19th century. The company of Cuvillier and Sons, which specialized in auctions, was founded by Augustin Cuvillier (1779-1849), a businessman, politician and justice of the peace.
