Series

This series chronicles activities and achievements of various Canadian interest groups involved in the fields of weaving and fashion design. It contains information brochures about weavers' guilds, promotional cards, leaflets and a pattern catalogue.

Among the information brochures preserved in the series is the 1955-1956 membership directory of the Hamilton Weavers' Guild. This typed booklet offers a brief description of the Guild's activities, membership dues, annual exhibition at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and how to borrow items from its library. In addition, this document provides contact information for several weaving yarn and accessories suppliers. There is also a brochure from the Spinners and Weavers Guild of Ontario. This document provides some information on the organization's history and activities, a list of its officers for the year 1952-1953, along with the names of several weaving schools, conferences and books. However, the brochure is composed primarily of ads. Most of the advertisers are Ontario-based weavers, suppliers and guilds, but several Quebec companies are listed as well, including La fileuse, a supplier of weaving cottons, wools and linens from Sainte-Foy, and Nilus Leclerc Inc., a loom manufacturer from L’Islet-Station. In this document, the Spinners and Weavers of Ontario underscore the pleasure of weaving, which is presented as a craft that can satisfy "the inborn desire of a man to create."

Two promotional cards present the six-week weaving course organized by the Searle Grain Company for farm wives in the Prairie provinces. These cards are illustrated with photographs of Dorothy Rankine Brownell, director of the program, sitting before a loom.

Finally, the series contains a flyer from Burnham & Burnham Hand Weavers from Jordan, Ontario, and two documents from the Fashion Designers Association of Canada, one of which is the program for an event organized by the Association that includes workshops, a guest speaker, panel discussion and fashion presentation. The set is completed by a pattern catalogue from the Canadian Fur Designers for 1968-1969.
