An Italian Brigand
This jacket and waistcoat were once part of a full costume that was eminently recognizable in the 1870s. Every event brought out numerous men portraying an “Italian Brigand,” or “Fra Diavolo,” based on the titular hero of Daniel Auber’s comic opera. Knee breeches with matching trim, ribbons crossed over the lower legs, a sash around the waist, and a tall, brimmed hat or soft tasselled cap undoubtedly completed this costume.
