An 18th-Century Gentleman
The 18th century was by far the historical period most represented in fancy dress. This ensemble is a particularly finely made example, with high-quality materials and construction. It is difficult to date, though the elaborate soutache design on the waistcoat and sash suggests the 1870s. Although we know neither who wore it nor where, the period he portrayed is evident from its styling.
