Fonds
In 1778 the Armstrongs, a Loyalist family, settled in Yamachiche, Quebec. Edward Armstrong married Elizabeth Dunn (b. 1775). In 1831, one of their sons, David Morrison Armstrong (d. 1873) married Leocardie, a daughter of Jacques Deligny, who was a landholder in Berthier and a member of the Assembly of Lower Canada from 1814 to 1837.
David M. Armstrong was a merchant in Berthier before serving as the local member of the Assembly from 1841-1851. In 1855 he became the legislative councillor for the district of Sorel and in 1867 was named to the same position for the Province of Quebec.
Mary Anne Johnstone (a.k.a. Nanny or Aunt Nanny, 1822-1906) married W. A. Phillips, son of Thomas Phillips of Beaver Hall, Montreal. They had at least two children, Mary Martha Phillips (1856-1937) and Edward W. H. Phillips (1861-1938).
Scope and Content
The Armstrong, Deligny and Phillips families fonds concerns the activities of Jacques Deligny and David Morrison Armstrong as landholders in Berthier. Deligny's papers contain seigneurial receipts and contracts; while Armstrong's consist of rent receipts and sales contracts. Also included are papers of members of the Deligny and Phillips families.
Photographs in the fonds consist mainly of portraits of the Armstrong and Phillips families, although there are also some portraits of Johnstone and Bentham family members. The portraits are mostly card photographs, although the fonds contains at least three tintypes, three ambrotypes and one daguerreotype. Photographs of buildings include one of the Armstrong home and another showing the Anglican church and rectory in Sorel. There is also a snapshot of an old mill near Lac Deligny, St. Gabriel de Brandon, and one lantern slide (found in Miss Phillips' paint box) depicting a farmhouse.
