Biographical Sketch

This fonds provides information about the family relations and the personal, social and professional lives of the members of the Clouston and Todd families from the late 19th century to around the mid-point of the 20th century. Some members played important roles in the development of Canada from the late 1800s on. Known for his energy and his exacting manner, Edward Seaborne Clouston served for many years as general manager of the Bank of Montreal and was president of the Canadian Bankers Association until his death in 1912. Dr. John Lancelot Todd, a professor of parasitology at McGill University, was recognized for his important contributions to medical science and for his work on the Canadian pension system for First World War veterans. His eldest daughter, Rosanna Seaborn Todd, not only made a name for herself on the artistic scene in Canada, the U.S.A. and the U.K., but also garnered a reputation for her research in Canadian history. In 2004 she auctioned off her large collection of documents on the Rebellions of 1837.

Scope and Content

This fonds primarily contains information on the professional activities of Edward Seaborne Clouston at the Bank of Montreal and the social life of his wife Annie Easton Clouston. It also provides some information about the private life of his daughter Osla Clouston (through her personal diaries containing accounts of her travels) and about the social and family life of his daughter Marjory Clouston Todd. The fonds also concerns the publications and research work of her husband, Dr. John Lancelot Todd. Dr. Todd's documents consist chiefly of archival material on his expeditions to Africa from 1902 to 1905, his work on the pensions of First World War veterans and on his research on typhus epidemics in Poland in 1920. They also include opinion pieces, in the form of letters to the editor, sent to various newspapers from 1939 on. The fonds also contains material on the professional activities of the Todd couple's eldest daughter, Rosanna Seaborn Todd. There are numerous documents showing her keen interest in the theatre and her work directing the Open Air Playhouse and the School of Theatre Inc. The fonds also contains material providing information about the family relations and school life at the Fermata School, in South Carolina, of Jacqueline and Bridget Todd, daughters of John L. Todd and Marjory C. Todd.

In addition, the Clouston and Todd families' fonds also includes documents on one of their main places of residence, the Boisbriant de Senneville estate located in suburban Montreal. Lastly, the fonds contains a large number of photographs taken from day to day and on trips abroad. There are also portraits of Clouston and Todd family members and a few commercial photograph albums.

The fonds also includes correspondence sent and received by the members of the Clouston and Todd families, personal diaries, newspaper articles, architectural drawings, a map, a scrapbook of clippings, photographs, photo albums and over 50 objects, including locks of hair and three bullets.
