Scope and ContentEntre 1609 et 1797, la République de Venise exige de ses fonctionnaires, notaires et scribes qui envoient des lettres au gouvernement de payer quatre soldis par lettre. Cet argent était envoyé à la commission chargée des inondations provoquées par les marées. Les lettres imprimées étaient numérotées par le gouvernement et portaient le lion de Saint-Marc, emblème de Venise, ainsi que de l'acronyme « AQ » pour « Acque ». Les lettres « AQ » sont considérées par certains comme la désignation du premier service postal en Occident, tandis que d'autres prétendent que c'était une sorte de taxe déguisée.
